Clutch issues 65 Allstate 250

Hi fellows Puchsters,
So I just finished restoring a 65 250 and CAN NOT seem to get the clutch to disengage all the way. When I back the clutch spring adjusting nuts off far enough to get the rear wheel to spin while in gear holding the clutch lever the nuts hit the primary cover. I’ve had the thing apart 1/2 dozen times and it’s driving me nuts. Having never ridden a Puch prior to this one do the clutches drag normally?

No, they don't 'drag normally' - drag is not normal. It sounds like a clutch adjustment problem to me. I have a '68 250 SGS; Did you rebuild this bike yourself? Is the little ball bearing down in its hole at the end of the clutch thrust pin? Do you have a manual?

If you remember the original settings ... go back to them. There is a hole in the cover on the right side of your engine, directly opposite the clutch basket. The adjustment is done there.

Is it possible you got an extra plate in the clutch? What oil are you using in the primary/gearbox?

Yes I rebuilt this using the manual. Correct # of friction disks and steels were used. The 5/16th ball was inserted behind the clutch rod. I’m using straight 50 wt oil in the crankcase.

So what I’m hearing is your clutches work just fine?

My clutch spring adjusting nuts are tight to the point that the studs are proud by about one thread. If too loose the clutch will drag. The clutch release adjustment is through the hole in the cover aft of the generator cover. If the clutch cable is the correct length the rocker arm (behind that cover) would be vertical.

After long periods of sitting the clutches on both my 250's will occasionally stick. I just add a little throttle and pop it into gear with the rear wheel on the ground. Pops em loose no problem. Are you trying to keep the rear wheel from spinning while you are on the center stand, bike in gear, and clutch lever pulled?

Did you manage to sort the dragging clutch cos I have the same problem?

Could be a stretched clutch cable...even adjusted all the way out it might be stretched from years of pulling, enough so that even with the clutch in, it's still a bit long, and therefore can't pull it out all the way...just a thought...

Hello ,I have many years experiance with Puch SG,SGS ,SVS's on 2 occasions i have found a dragging clutch was down to a small hairline crack in the castings where the 2 securing bolts are , the result was when pulling in the clutch lever the casting moved with the loss of real clutch action! hence a dragging clutch and bad gear change, so check the castings.good luck.
