Visual Exhaust Question

Post by Dr. Frankenstein » Mon Dec 03, 2018 12:14 pm

If I am missing a baffle in my left muffler(which I am), would that affect the appearance/flow of exhaust when the bike (1968 Puch 250) is running?

I was running the engine yesterday and noticed I was only seeing exhaust out of one tailpipe - the right one. Is the bike only running on one cylinder? It seems OK...I'm taking it through it's break-in period, and just noticing different things here and there as the bike warms up from it's decades-long sleep. Spark plug, maybe?

Also, the bike just 'Quit' briefly on me - I was going down the road, pulled in the clutch and it just Stopped...! (The Engine, not the bike..).
I was worried that it might have somehow seized, but it fired right up again and idled great - is this unusual? It has plenty of oil, and a 50:1 fuel/oil ratio as per Matt out at Motorwest…

The motor may have 2 pistons but basically there is only one cylinder and the fuel mixture gets squished from both endz. ;)

My 250SGS also smokes more from the right muffler than the left and has been doing so for years now.
Coincidentally mine also occasionally cuts out when I clutch. Usually when Im making a right hand turn.
Sorry cant help with any answers but at least you know that you are not alone :-)

That IS peculiar - good to know, though. Like I said, the noticeable smoke is only coming out the right one, but I put my hand over the exhaust outlets and I can feel them both chugging the same, or seem to...

And re: the clutch thing, maybe its just a particular tic of the bike? Like you said, it doesn't do it all the time... and funny, I *was making a right-hand turn at the time...weird.

I wonder if that 'cutting out when you make a right turn' is a fuel thing...? Does anyone else experience this phenomenon?

I finally worked out what was causing my engine cut out.
There was a short in my stop light which was causing the ignition to short out.
So when I was at low revs coming to a stop, clutching and using the rear brake the ignition would short out.
If I was using the rear brake whilst still at Speed the ignition would momentarily cut out but as I was still in gear it would automatically jump start.
Weird I know but as I don't ride the bike very often it took me for ever to work it out.
